Located in the historic Westclox building Fire On Fifth offers a dining experience like no other. In the late 1800's Mr. Stalberg, an inventor came to LaSalle-Peru with an idea of clock making and on December 23, 1885 The United Clock Company was founded. At the time it was a small 3 story building with around 25 workers. . Due to struggles in 1887 The United Clock Company would go bankrupt and closed it doors. Mr. F.W. Matthiessen would then acquire the building and reopen it as the Western Clock Company, or known today as Westclox, a division of General Time Corporation. Westclox became profitable and continued to be a staple for employment in the Illinois Valley. It was known nationwide for its cleanliness and good housekeeping and by the mid 1950's employed over 5,500 workers. In 1967 Westclox was taken over and became known as a division of Talley Industries who moved clock and watch production to Alabama and Georgia. The LaSalle-Peru facility became known as Talley Military products, eventually closing their door for good in March of 1980. Today the Westclox building is thriving just as much as it was in its prime as a clock and watch factory.
